What's Yorkshire like for disabled visual artists?

Photo of the visual arts discussion meeting in Yorkshire

Three Arts Council regions (Yorkshire, North East and North West) are looking into the opportunities and investment in disabled visual artists across the three regions.

I went to a meeting today looking at the situation for Yorkshire - and what a patchy picture it is! For some, its about being artists first, but still having their access needs met, and for others, their very sense of identity is bound up in being a disabled person. Its going to be interesting to see how one strategic or approach can genuinely reach out to and involve all.

All the usual topics came up - access, benefits, profile and prominence, quality and the differences between professional and community practice - and some unusual ones - including how some galleries are swayed by the personal prejudices of their directors.

A long way to go yet - good luck to DADA in making sense of it all - can't wait to see where it goes next.
